Let’s give thanks to our local public health departments

Local public health staff have been crucial to our vaccine rollout and the success of other public health measures. They regularly battle misinformation that still leaves too many people, even relatively healthy individuals, vulnerable to a deadly virus and lingering health complications. Despite the challenges and a lack of meaningful investment in our health infrastructure during the past few decades, they supported testing programs, conducted case investigations and contact tracing and provided millions of people with lifesaving immunizations.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we owe our deepest appreciation to local public health workers. These workers are some of the many dedicated frontline employees who have fought tirelessly to protect the health of their communities since the pandemic began. Sadly, 20 months after the first confirmed case in Michigan, many of them are fighting to preserve their work, their personal safety and the wellbeing of their families.
