Cass Tech’s Deone Walker has top 5 but ‘I mess with Michigan’ football

Detroit Cass Tech’s Deone Walker may be a gentle giant off the football field, but on it he becomes a 6-foot-7, 340-pound praying mantis.

“He’s a real quiet kid who doesn’t really speak up a lot, but when he does, he means business,” said Marvin Rushing, in his first season as the Technicians head coach. “As we approach game day, he kind of turns it up and is a little bit more active. But honestly, he’s kind of shy, which is kind of shocking given his size and stature, and how he plays. But then again, when it’s game day, and he knows his brothers need him, he’s going to step up.”

In Saturday’s dominating 49-22 season-opening victory over Southfield A&T in the Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State, Walker made two defining back-to-back defensive stops to show why he is one of the nation’s most coveted lineman recruits.

    8. OT Deone Walker: Detroit Cass Tech, Sr., 6-6, 345 (Michigan).

With Cass Tech already up in the first quarter 14-0, but Southfield moving down to the Technicians’ 2-yard line for the potential score, Walker turned into a notorious predator.

On the first play, Southfield A&T running back Davier Burt met a brick wall as he was brought down for no gain by Walker. And on the next play, Walker came up with a highlight reel crushing tackle for a 3-yard loss against Burt.

“My first indication was my coach always told me to read off my man’s stance,” said Walker, ranked the No. 8 player in Michigan according to the Free Press. “He was leaning, so after the first ball was snapped, he went straight down, so I knew something was coming my way. I just played it, did a spin move and made it.”
