Fratelli Beretta USA is recalling about 862,000 pounds of uncured antipasto meat trays because of possible salmonella contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) announced late Friday.
The product being recalled is 24-ounce trays with two 12-ounce packages of “Fratelli Beretta Uncured Antipasto Prosciutto, Soppressata, Milano Salami & Coppa.” These products were shipped nationwide and have “best by” dates of Aug. 27, 2021, through Feb. 11, 2022, with a 073541305316 UPC code.
This product is linked to an investigation launched by the FSIS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) into a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 36 people in 17 states, including Michigan. There was no prior recall of the product, according to the CDC.
Of those that have become ill, 12 have been hospitalized.
There are two strains of salmonella — Infactis (13 people infected) and Typhimurium (23 people infected) — associated with this outbreak. The CDC is reporting them together.
Of the people in the outbreak, 25 reported eating a variety of Italian-style meats. The CDC identified the Fratelli Beretta brand of uncured antipasto sliced Italian-style meats as possibly being contaminated with salmonella. Of the 15 people who remembered a specific product or had a record of purchase, 14 said they had eaten the Fratelli Beretta brand.
Although a total of 36 people have been infected, the number of sick people is likely much higher, the CDC says. “This is because many infected people recover without medical care and are not tested for salmonella, “ the CDC says. Also, some illnesses may not have been reported yet.
Here’s what the CDC’s alert advises people to do:
- Do not eat these products, even if the product is open and you’ve already eaten some of it and no one got sick.
- If you’re not sure of the brand and prepackaged Italian-style meats in your refrigerator, don’t eat them and throw them away.
- Wash any items in hot soapy water or a dishwasher, including containers and surfaces, that may have touched or come in contact with the products.
- Businesses should not sell the product.
Illnesses were reported from May 9 to July 27. So far in Michigan, two people have become sick, according to the CDC’s outbreak map.

Most people infected with salmonella, according to the CDC, experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. These symptoms typically start six hours to six days after being exposed to the bacteria. People with weakened immune systems, children younger than 5 and adults older than 65 may experience more severe illnesses. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.
Severe symptoms of salmonella, according to the CDC, include:
- Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees.
- Diarrhea for more than three days that is not improving
- Bloody diarrhea
- So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, such as: not peeing much, dry mouth and throat, feeling dizzy when standing up.
If your symptoms are severe, the CDC recommends contacting your health care provider.
The CDC estimates that salmonella causes about 1.35 million illnesses resulting in 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the U.S. every year.
