Michigan woman fights for life after Cedar Point accident

The Michigan woman who was injured while waiting in line to ride a roller coaster at Cedar Point amusement park is in intensive care, clinging to life, while Ohio investigators try to figure out exactly what happened.

The Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal — the Free Press reporting partner that has been closely following this story — said 44-year-old Rachel Hawes of Swartz Creek was struck in the head with an L-shaped piece of a ride that was roughly the size of an adult man’s hand.

“We are devastated by last weekend’s accident at Cedar Point,” relatives of Hawes said in a public statement. “We want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this time. Rachel is fighting for her life.”

The  Aug. 15 accident sent people in line scrambling for safety.

David Miran, the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s chief of amusement rides, said Monday the metal piece that fell off the ride is a bracket that was attached to the back of a train car, which is designed to look like dragster.
